As your doctor has already explained, hepatitis can affect the absorption of nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of our body, which can, in turn, accelerate the development of the disease. A diet adapted to hepatitis must, therefore, ensure a nutrition facilitating the regeneration of the liver and a positive evolution of the disease.
To guide you in choosing your diet, we offer 10 rules that will help you take care of your health, and your liver in particular:
1. Avoid processed foods. These products often contain a large amount of chemical additives that can increase the effort of assimilation and detoxification of the liver.
2. Consume a lot of fruits and vegetables. Prefer them grown biologically, without pesticides or fertilizers. This will give you all the nutrients and fiber you need to develop a healthy immune system.
3. Consume a lot of protein . They are fundamental for restoring damaged liver cells. Make sure to ingest the necessary amount, including in your diet vegetables, fish and lean meats (rabbit, chicken, turkey, veal). Be careful though! Consumed in excess, proteins can also promote the accumulation of toxic waste if the liver can not eliminate them properly.
4. Avoid foods high in fat, salt or sugar . They have low nutritional value and can cause digestive problems. On the other hand, prefer to boil or steam.
5. Reduce your caffeine intake. It is indeed a substance that must be treated by the liver, so it is recommended to drink with great moderation.
6. Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol can play a fundamental role in the progression of the disease.
7. Eat little and often. Ideally, small portions spread over 5 meals or snacks a day, it facilitates the digestion of food. By eating less abundantly with each meal, you will avoid this uncomfortable feeling of heaviness.
8. Drink lots of fluids. Unless your doctor has prescribed a fluid restriction, drink plenty of water. We recommend 8 to 12 glasses of water a day. If you have vomiting, increase the amount to relieve dehydration.
9. Limit the salt . In the diet, salt can aggravate fluid accumulation and swelling of the liver by promoting water retention in your body. It is therefore recommended that people with hepatitis limit the amount of sodium ingested.
10. Eat foods rich in antioxidants. Fruits, vegetables and green vegetables. Also favor those orange or green, which provide a significant intake of antioxidants. Make it a habit to include them in your daily diet: oranges, mangoes, apricots, apples, carrots, pumpkins, chard, broccoli, arugula, pineapple …
